One of the large events of for this year’s celebrations is the Cathay Pacific International Chinese New Year Carnival. This is the first time that Hong Kong celebrates CNY with carnival instead of the traditional International Night Parade.

In the previous years, the Night Parade takes place in the surrounding streets of Tsim Sha Tsui. However, this year you enjoy the parade within the brand new four-day Chinese New Year Carnival 2020 event. So, let’s take a closer look what this is about.

From January 25, 2020 – January 28, 2020, you can enjoy the Chinese New Year Carnival and Parade along the West Kowloon Cultural District Art Park and Promenade.

The parade takes place on the following times:

4:15 pm (January 25, 2020)
3:00 pm (January 26, 2020)
3:00 pm and 6:30 pm (January 27 and 28, 2020).

The Chinese New Year Carnival is a four-day fun-filled event. Aside from a daily parade you can expect dazzling performances from local and international performers, artists, dancers and musicians. But that’s not all. Get ready for plenty of fun games, workshops and delicious food.

One of the highlights of the brand new event will be the traditional Chinese New Year Parade. This year, you can enjoy the parade along the West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade.

Aside from the parade, there is plenty of fun-filled action. Let’s take a closer look.

Another highlight of the event are the manifold booths and games. Cathay Pacific set up a special Chinese New Year Booth of Wishes. Head over to this unique Wishing Tree and join the game to win some flight tickets for your whole family.

Hong Kong’s famous theme parks Disneyland and Ocean Park set up special booths and stages. Head over to the Magical Year of the Mouse photo booth to snap a lucky shot with Mickey Mouse or your favourite Ocean Park characters.

There are also several photo spots to fill up your Instagram and FB accounts. Make a wish and get some good fortune for the upcoming Year of the Rat at the New Year Happy Arch display, AR Joyful Photo Frame or the Lucky Lantern of Good Fortune from the Hong Kong Tourism Board.

Aside from the parade, you can enjoy over 50 groups of local and international performers. The all-day programme has something for everyone. This includes awarding winning cultural dance troupes, acrobats, theatrical performances, magic, marching bands, and comedy. International performers are from Austria, Belgium, Canada, Finland, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, Philippines, Netherlands, USA,UK and the Ukraine.

The Lunar New Year is also about food, snacks and treats. At the carnival there are around 15 food and workshop booths where you can enjoy some culinary highlights.

Make sure to check out the Experience Macao Your Own Style Food Truck where you can sample some local Macau snacks and create your own tote bag with their Mascot Mak Mak.

In case you like street for you might want to sample some from Korean Michelin-recommend Kelly’s Cape Bop booth.

Other food booths include Bubba Gump Shrimp, Royal Garden, Taiwanese cuisine Shin Tong Wang (Taiwanese beef noodles, curry squid, etc.), Iconic H for German flavours and snacks (hotdogs, pork knuckles and sausage platter), Uniocean (Hokkaido crabs), Gourmet Tasty (Kobe chasu) and Sunny Day Kitchen for Southeast Asian snacks.

The opening hours of the Chinese New Year Carnival are from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

The parade along the promenade takes place at 4:15pm (January 25) and 3:00pm (January 26). On January 27 & 28, you have a chance to watch the parade twice (3:00 pm and 6:30pm).

In case you would like to enjoy and watch the parade, you should arrive early. Since, the event takes place along the West Kowloon Cultural Art District prepare that crowd management is in place.

Having said that, the best time to visit the carnival is between 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm.

The most convenient way to get to the Chinese New Year Carnival is to take Hong Kong’s subway to the Kowloon MTR Station and take MTR Exit E4 or E5.

Once you are out of the subway station walk across the footbridge from Nga Cheung Road towards Museum Drive. The walk takes approx. 15 minutes.

Taking a bus is another option to get to this event. Hop on one of the many KMB buses that take the Western Harbour Crossing Tunnel and get off at the Western Harbour Crossing (Nga Cheung Road) bus stop.

Alternatively, you also can hop on one of the buses that stops at the Kowloon Station Bus Terminus and get off there.

Once you arrive, follow the signage towards the West Kowloon Cultural District Art Park. It’s about a 15-minutes walk.

You also have the option to take a cab which may be a good alternative if you travel with 3 – 4 persons or if you are pressed for time.
